At school, Garrett was asked to dress as his favorite character from a book. It didn't take him long to decide on Mr. McGreely (the gardener) from Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! by Candace Fleming. After ordering a pair of overalls off the internet, Garrett got to work on making his vegetable garden.
He was careful to read over the description of all the wire fences and moats and walls that were put up around Mr. McGreely's vegetable garden to keep the 3 hungry bunnies out.
Here's Mr. McGreely ready for Character Day.
And of course his vegetable garden.
At Garrett's Fall party, one of the moms actually read Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! to the class and asked Garrett to act out Mr. McGreely. He was right in character the entire time!
Along with a craft and food, we were also lucky enough to have a pirate show done by one of the parents. He did a great job amusing 20 five year olds for 20 whole minutes! I was impressed! Olivia sat right down with the class and enjoyed every minute of it as well.
Later that night, Garrett changed into a Power Rangers costume for Trick-or-Treating. It was the first year the kids were really into it. We actually drove to the back of the neighborhood and then finished on our street. At one point, I reminded them that the faster they ran the more candy they would get. (It was chilly - and Joe and I wanted to be done before dark)
Our plan worked. We trick-or-treated from 6:15 - 7:00 ~ home while it was still light out! Garrett was then the official candy helper at the door and made sure everyone got the same amount each time. He would pick 2 or 3 pieces of candy, drop them in their bags and say "there you go". It was really cute to watch and the kids really respected him and never grabbed for more candy or complained about what they got.
I didn't get a picture of it, but they also sorted all their candy on the floor and made a few trades before turning into bed :)

grady lee was quite impressed with garretts creativity! your little man is, well, just that: a little man! it seems like each new batch of pics you post he looks more and more grown up! i guess learning to read and do math and wear big-kid costumes does that, huh?
